Entomology Today featured a piece on the discovery of three new leafhoppers (Futasujinus) from China. The new species were identified when researchers examined museum collection specimens from China, the UK, and the US.
One of the new species, Futasujinus dietrichi, was named for Dr. Chris Dietrich, a University of Illinois researcher, in honor of his work with leafhoppers. The paper describing the species was published in Annals of the Entomological Society of America.
Dietrich is a Systematic Entomologist with the Illinois Natural History Survey and one of two curators for the INHS Insect Collection. He is also lead PI for the TCN InvertNet: An Integrative Platform for Research on Environmental Change, Species Discovery and Identification. InvertNet’s goal is to digitize approximately 50 million arthropod specimens using robotic scanning of vials, slides, and drawers and crowd-sourcing of label data from images
