Newberry College News issued a press release October 7, 2014, about one of their faculty members being part of one of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) latest awards establishing a new Thematic Collections Network.
Newberry College is among nine South Carolina institutions (and 45 institutions spanning the southeast) participating in the Southeast Regional Network of Expertise and Collections (SERNEC) in the newly funded TCN project The Key to the Cabinets: Building and Sustaining a Research Database for a Global Biodiversity Hotspot.
The Newberry College Herbarium is a small collection founded in 1986 that houses vascular plants, including ferns and fern allies, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. The Herbarium plans to digitize more than 20,000 herbarium specimens (the majority of their collection). Dr. Charles Horn, professor of Biology and curator of the Newberry College Herbarium, will lead the College’s contribution to the SERNEC project.
