This wiki supports the '''SPNHC 2017 Biodiversity Informatics 101 Short Course''', Denver, Colorado, 18 June, 2017.

Three themes of this course:
The short course will provide an introduction to natural history biodiversity informatics. The course is designed for museum professionals that need a better understanding of the natural history informatics landscape or the resources available for digitizing and digitally sharing natural history collections data. Topics will cover the basics of natural history collection data and digital object lifecycle management, including digitally archiving and mobilizing collections data and participation in global initiatives. The course will be led by museum and informatics professionals with experience in natural history collections digitization and informatics.

Abstract.

=== Three themes of this course: ===
*All Sections include panel and open-discussion sessions for questions, generating new ideas, and developing professional networks. Those signing up may also be invited to share information and their specific expertise in a presentation.
**Theme 1: Data, Standards, and Resources. What is Natural History Biodiversity Informatics? Topics covered will include introductions to data standards, data sharing standards, specimen and collection object imaging, data mobilization, data and media management, data cleanup tools and methods, and best practices for these subjects.
** Theme 2:  Who's who in Natural History Biodiversity Informatics? We will provide overviews for many of the projects, initiatives, and organizations currently involved in mobilizing collections data, see many examples here. Find out how you and your collections benefit from these initiatives. Learn how you can contribute your expertise and experience to them.
**Theme 3:  Getting Involved. Resources for learning more about and participating in Natural History Biodiversity Informatics.  For example, find out how you might increase your biodiversity informatics skills and data literacy through a Data or Software Carpentry workshop. Investigate existing iDigBio and other community working groups. Get a SPNHC Demo Camp Preview. Learn how all this content helps you work with your collections’ informatics specialists. And, please come to help shape the 2018 SPNHC + TDWG joint meeting opportunities.

This wiki supports the SPNHC 2017 Biodiversity Informatics 101 Short Course, Denver, Colorado, 18 June, 2017.

Three themes of this course:

  • All Sections include panel and open-discussion sessions for questions, generating new ideas, and developing professional networks. Those signing up may also be invited to share information and their specific expertise in a presentation.
    • Theme 1: Data, Standards, and Resources. What is Natural History Biodiversity Informatics? Topics covered will include introductions to data standards, data sharing standards, specimen and collection object imaging, data mobilization, data and media management, data cleanup tools and methods, and best practices for these subjects.
    • Theme 2: Who's who in Natural History Biodiversity Informatics? We will provide overviews for many of the projects, initiatives, and organizations currently involved in mobilizing collections data, see many examples here. Find out how you and your collections benefit from these initiatives. Learn how you can contribute your expertise and experience to them.
    • Theme 3: Getting Involved.
