Rationale

In order to meet NSF expectations to offer services indiscriminately to all biodiversity collections professionals, iDigBio endeavors to provide video streaming and/or recording of its events, including, but not limited to, workshops, webinars, conferences, and symposia. iDigBio also prefers that online event speakers grant permission to be recorded and to post a copy of the recording of their presentation on the IDigBio conference website for asynchronous viewing by registered participants.

Date Workshop Name (Calendar Announcement) Brief Summary Links 09/29/2020 - 09/29/2020 Finding Field Station Data for Research Use: A virtual mini-workshop The discovery and use of digital field station data for place-based biodiversity research as well as species discovery within a station’s boundaries and service area are essential contributions. Although many field stations curate their own biological collections, at least some of which have been digitized and made available online, field stations have traditionally served as important specimen collecting localities for a variety of researchers across taxonomies, resulting in a potential plethora of station-relevant digital data curated by non-station universities and museums. The rapidly expanding online availability of these data, motivated in large part by the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity Collections program, has made these data readily available to station scientists. As the U.S. center for enabling and facilitating specimen data digitization and mobilization, iDigBio’s portal (http://portal.idigbio.org/) serves approximately 124 million transcribed specimen records and 25 million associated images. This virtual mini-workshop will teach participants how to find and download records that are relevant to a specific field station and its surroundings, as well as how these records might be used to augment existing station data. Wiki 08/02/2020 - 08/07/2020 iDigBio and Collaborations at Ecologicial Society of America 2020 For 2020, plans are underway to once again provide a joint Data Help Desk, participate in the Open Science Section at ESA, and make major contributions to Career Central that will be featured in ESA's conference promotional activities. In addition, some of us will be presenting in ESA Special Sessions and Ignite Sessions. iDigBio works collaboratively with other NSF-funded programs to share and facilitate broader biocollections data use and provide access to data and computational literacy skills and knowledge needed to support FAIR and reproducible research. Wiki 06/08/2020 - 06/12/2020 SPNHC and ICOMNATHIST Virtual Conference 2020 iDigBio events at SPNHC and ICOMNATHIST Virtual Conference 2020 included an Education Share Fair designed and lead by Molly Phillips (iDigBio's Education Outreach Diversity Inclusion Coordinator) and a symposium focusing on collections management/software/leadership for the future titled: Envisioning Collections Management for the Evolving Biodiversity Data Lifecycle. The role of collections management in the biodiversity data lifecycle has been dramatically affected by worldwide specimen digitization programs. Institutions looking to support a visionary future for collections-based biodiversity data need to cultivate a culture of lifelong learning as the expectations of collections management evolve. This symposium highligts key challenges and opportunities involved in designing and driving such a vision that can address impending global challenges. SPNHC Symposium Abstracts SPNHC Symposium Recording Share Fair Materials Share Fair Recording 04/27/2020 - 04/29/2020 Georeferencing for Paleo: Refreshing the approach to fossil localities As the paleo collections community wraps up several TCNs we recognize that a significant amount of digitization work remains to be done and that georeferencing is one of the next big roadblocks. Across all collection types, there are major issues with the quality of georeference data currently available on biodiversity data aggregators such as iDigBio and GBIF. For paleo collections, there are additional issues related to applying existing georeferencing workflows in the paleontological context, as well as to sharing georeference data publicly. This workshop will take advantage of the momentum catalyzed by ADBC funding in the paleontological collections community to address critical issues related to georeferencing workflows and georeferencing data quality. The developers of TPT's primary imaging system (i.e., Macroscopic Solutions) additionally provided hands-on image training demonstrations using Macropod Systems. Date Workshop Name (Calendar Announcement) Brief Summary Links 11/08/2019 - 11/09/2019 Broadening Participation in the Biological Sciences: New Mexico This is the third Broadening Diversity workshop that is part of a western-US workshop series with a goal to introduce undergraduate students, especially those in underrepresented populations, to museum and biodiversity science careers (EODI). BLUE page 10/31/2019 - 11/02/2019 SACNAS 2019 SACNAS 2019- The National Diversity in STEM Conference was held October 31 - November 2, 2019 in Honolulu, Hawai'i, at the Hawai’i Convention Center. SACNAS is the “largest multidisciplinary and multicultural STEM diversity event in the country.” The 2019 event was a 3-day conference which focused on activities to equip, empower, and energize participants for their academic and professional paths in STEM. SACNAS has been around for 45 years, but this was the first time iDigBio as a project has participated (EODI). Blog Post 10/22/2019 - 10/25/2019 Biodiversity Next Conference International Alignment Symposium (Paraphrased from abstract). A number of recent initiatives, often working at a country or continental level, are making huge strides in regional digitisation, aggregation and visualisation of collections data. Often the intellectual case, methodologies, organisational processes and impact of these programmes are very similar, differing only where regional needs demand a difference in priorities. This suggests that the geo-/bio-diversity informatics community is driving toward a common vision for community activities, and provides the means for less-resourced regions to highlight needs for local investment. But without international coordination, we risk duplicating effort, and subsequently struggle to build upon each other’s work. With so many collections embracing the challenges of digitisation, there is a constant need to share progress and learn from each other. This symposium aims to showcase and discuss some key areas of development, including such topics as: artificial intelligence and machine learning, automated data extraction, new data capture workflows, barcodes for automated data capture, lessons learned from crowdsourcing data transcription, measuring cost and impact of collections digitisation to support data-driven decision making - policy - and infrastructure investment, focus on organizational cultural change, private collections, more effective dissemination of workflows, and expansion of stakeholders. Rapid advances in data science and technology are transforming biodiversity research. The volume and complexity of biodiversity data being generated, their availability via aggregation, and the interdisciplinary nature of modern scientific research are driving the need for new skill sets to address global scientific issues. Central to addressing the needs of the biodiversity research community is identifying a set of core and transferrable data literacy competencies and developing strategies to help develop a data-literate workforce. This symposium looks at models, lessons learned, and standards and skills knowledge needed across the entire community from data creation to data use. The ADBC Summit brought together representatives from Thematic Collections Networks (TCNs), Partners to Existing Networks (PENs), the National Science Foundation (NSF), iDigBio, and other initiatives related to the NSF’s effort to digitize biodiversity collections through the ADBC program. The Summit’s aim was to inspire collaboration and facilitate discussions on shared goals, challenges, and opportunities. Blog Post 08/11/2019 - 08/16/2019 Data Help Desk at ESA 2019 For the second year ecological data repositories and data specialists will collaborate at the Ecological Society of America's annual meeting to add a Data Help Desk (DHD) to the Poster/Exhibition Hall. The Environmental Data Initiative (EDI), iDigBio, Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), DataONE, GBIF, NEON and Arctic Data Center will each engage participants one-on-one about their questions, comments and concerns about using these data in their discipline and area of research. MyFossil Announcement Blog Post 07/15/2019 Using Data Science Skills and Digitized Natural History Collections Data to Investigate Ecological and Evolutionary Principles in Introductory Biology Courses Workshop at Evolution of Data in the Classroom: From Data to Data Science (SW 2019) [From the abstract] In this workshop you'll explore activities, developed by the Biodiversity Literacy in Undergraduate Education (BLUE) RCN-UBE, in which students investigate topics in ecology, evolution, and organismal biology using data from digitized natural history collections. BLUE's goals are to bring together communities of biodiversity, data science, and education specialists to identify core undergraduate biodiversity data competencies and standards and develop effective strategies for sustained integration of biodiversity and data literacy education into the undergraduate biology curriculum. BLUE participants have brought some of these strategies into practice by developing example curriculum materials (EODI). Blog Post 06/28/2019 07/02/2019 American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) Data Help Desk and Broadening Participation Themed Session The American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) meeting will be held in Washington, DC in June 28-July 2, 2019. In collaboration with the ASM Human Diversity Committee we have been granted a themed session to focus on broadening participation in mammalogy. In addition to the session on broadening participation iDigBio co-hosted the “Data Help Desk.” in collaboration with NEON and VertNet (EODI). Wiki Blog Post 06/25/2019 Digital Resources in Paleontology, Teacher Professional Development Workshop Advancing the Digitization of Biological Collections (ADBC) has allowed museums and smaller collections to become more accessible through online data aggregators and interactive websites. Many of the Thematic Collection Networks within the ADBC community have produced K-12 educational material as a product of their digitization efforts. The paleo-themed programs in ADBC, along with several other outside initiatives have come together to organize a one-day workshop in association with the 2019 North American Paleontological Convention (NAPC) on June 25, 2019 (EODI). MyFossil Page Blog Post 06/10/2019 - 06/12/2019 3rd Annual Digital Data Conference Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in collaborated with iDigBio of the Florida Museum of Natural History, the Natural Science Collections Alliance, and Ecological Society of America to host the third annual Digital Data in Biodiversity Research conference, Methods, Protocols, and Analytical Tools for Specimen-based Research, in the Biological Sciences at Yale University, New Haven, CT. Wiki Blog Post 06/12/2019 Workshop: Tools and Best Practices for Biodiversity Data Science: A Data Carpentries Introduction with Python at 3rd Annual Digital Data Conference The Carpentries (comprised of Data Carpentry, Library Carpentry, and Software Carpentry) is a project whose mission is to teach foundational computational and data science skills to researchers and others who create, manage, and use data. Specifically, Data Carpentry lessons are designed to be picked up by learners who do not have any previous programming experience. Data Carpentry workshops are typically organized in a 2-day format, but we will compress the lessons in this workshop to 1 day to focus on learning Python and Jupyter notebooks to work with data files in a reproducible manner. Before covering Python, we will go through a lesson using Excel to learn about the "tidy data" format, and best practices for working with tabular data files. We will also spend some time discussing community-building around the Carpentries, and how we can partner together to build biodiversity data science literacy at our organizations. Blog Post 05/25/2019 - 05/31/2019 SCNet Symposium: No Collection Left Behind: Research Contributions of Small Collections SCNet, Biodiversity Collections Network (BCoN), iDigBio, NSCA, and Biodiversity Literacy in Undergraduate Education Network (BLUE) cosponsored the 5th annual SCNet Symposium at SPNHC 2019. The goal of this symposium was to highlight data-driven examples of the contributions small biological collections make to the national digitization initiative and resultant biodiversity research. This symposium discussed small collections in the context of their unique and valuable contributions to digitization, aggregated data and metadata, and downstream research (EODI). Symposium Report 05/25/2019 - 05/31/2019 Collecting Measures of Success Biocollections and collections data facilitate many important activities including research, curation, education, outreach, and policy-development. While the value of collection objects and related data seems obvious for those using them, it is often difficult to gather metrics needed to convey and communicate collections-related activities and their importance. Choosing appropriate, consistent and meaningful metrics, efficiently harvesting values, and being able to visualize success (or issues) in appropriate ways, is challenging and often changing with technological advancements and public perceptions. In this symposium, speakers will share stories and strategies, of metrics readily available, in development, and only just dreamt about. We also plan to encourage those attending to share their metrics stories. Event Report 03/09/2019 - 03/12/2019 The Digital Future of Entomology - Symposium and Panel at Eastern EntSoc 2019 In this symposium and panel session titled: The Digital Future of Entomology, speakers and panelists seek to share lessons learned, and current trends from digitizing insect collections. Speakers' topics range from historical data uses, fossil amber data, enhanced data dissemination and discovery, automated (deep learning) insect identification using wing images, digitization lessons learned, and worldwide efforts to mobilize collections data and data use. Symposium Wiki Symposium Notes 02/04/2019 - 02/05/2019 DigIn Marine Invertebrate Digitization Workshop In this 2 day workshop, collection personnel from all major and most medium-sized IZ collections in the US and abroad, will share information about their collections and curatorial and digitization workflows. Participants will discuss best practices and consider ways to improve on existing methods to improve efficiency and speed of data mobilization for marine invert collections. Wiki Workshop Report 02/01/2019 - 02/02/2019 iDigTRiO Biological Sciences Career Conference & Fair iDigBio and the Office of Academic Support (OAS) and Student Support Services (SSS)/TRIO Program at University of Florida (UF) co-organized a free Biology Career Conference and Fair on February 1-2, 2019 for undergraduate students (EODI). Event Report 01/17/2019 - 01/19/2019 Phenology Deep Learning Workshop This workshop focused on exploring such technologies as deep convolutional neural networks (CNN), data protocols and standards for linking trait data to specimen records, tracking phenological synchronization across phyla, and tools for trait measurement and analysis. This workshop aims to give curators, collection managers, students, and everyone willing to share their data on GBIF (or other aggregators like iDigBio and Canadensys) a set of useful tools and methodologies to go from their in-house database to the publication of data on GBIF. We will even go further, and discover how to search and use data published on Canadensys, which is now based on the Atlas of Living Australia framework, and on GBIF. iDigBio is collaborating with Canadensys to present this workshop. Workshop Wiki Data cleaning, publication, re-use help Workshop materials 10/01/2018 - 10/03/2018 ADBC Summit 2018 Join the leading researchers and professionals striving to digitize our nation's Natural History Collections! The annual ADBC Summit brings together representatives from TCNs, PENs, NSF, iDigBio, and other initiatives related to the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity Collections (ADBC) program. The Summit inspires collaboration and focuses discussions on shared goals, challenges, and opportunities. Wiki 09/21/2018 Digitizing and Mobilizing Research Station Collections Data at OBFS 2018 The amount of digital specimen data available to field stations has grown exponentially, and the number of digitized specimens collected in a field station's geographic region but held in museum and academic collections elsewhere, often at great distances from the station, are providing a wealth of easily accessible information and opportunities for discovery. This concurrent session at the OBFS 2018 annual meeting will offer an introduction to the status and availability of digital data and the national digitization effort, followed by a hands-on demonstration of how to search for and potentially use these data in field station research and activities. Wiki 08/30/2018 - 8/30/2018 Symposium Challenges Implementing Collections Data Quality Feedback: synthesizing the community experience Much data quality (DQ) feedback is now available to data providers from aggregators of collections specimen and related data. Similarly, transcription centres and crowdsourcing platforms also provide data that must be assessed and often manipulated before uploading to a local database and subsequently published with aggregators. Sharing DQ integration experiences can help reveal risks and opportunities. Discovering others have the same conundrums helps develop a community of belonging and may assist in removing duplication of effort. It is important to leverage the knowledge and experience of those who are currently validating data to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the process. Documenting and classifying these challenges also facilitates motivation and community building by informing those who would tackle these challenges. In this case, talks from aggregators and data providers give all of us a chance to learn from their stories about implementing and integrating DQ feedback. Wiki 08/29/2018- 8/29/2018 Symposium: Completing the Data Pipeline: Collections Data Use in Research, Education and Outreach The purpose of this symposium is to highlight the diverse uses of digital collections resources for research, education, and outreach including activities that are currently underway around the globe with special focus on using collections data for: innovative research applications, inspiring outreach initiatives intended for new audiences, and educational resources and programs that are ensuring a new generation of competent collections data users. We anticipate this to be a full day event with up to 20 speakers. We will invite selected speakers to submit abstracts and depend on abstract submissions through the SPNHC abstract submission process. Wiki Workshop Report 07/22/2018 Using Digitized Herbarium Data in Research: Application for Ecology, Phylogentics, and Biogeography In this full-day workshop, we will provide hands-on instruction for novices and advanced users alike. In addition to learning how to use various software packages, we will also discuss the assumptions of the analyses and the interpretations of the results. We will divide into groups based on participants' experience, so novices and advanced users are all welcome. For beginners, we will cover ways to access and download digitized herbarium data (from GBIF, iDigBio, and other aggregators) and prepare data sets for analysis. We will then offer a series of modules on using georeferencing software (GEOLocate) and applying Maxent software to construct ecological niche models and do paleoclimatic modeling. For advanced users, we will provide new, innovative modules for linking specimen data to phylogenetic trees, computing phylogenetic diversity measures, conducting biogeographic analyses, and more. We will cover strategies to extract information from niche models, such as species occupancy in ecological space and niche breadth, and link them to phylogenetic trees to test hypotheses about niche evolution, such as ancestral niche reconstruction. Participants will use new integrative software tools developed by the BiotaPhy Project (www.biotaphy.org) in collaboration with the Lifemapper Project that link occurrence data (through iDigBio), niche models, and ecological statistics calculated from the models, applying these to large trees in a desktop geospatial environment using the QGIS GIS application. 07/09/2018 - 07/11/2018 Drawers, Jars and Databases: Teaching the Hidden Science of Natural History Museums A teacher workshop hosted by North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, iDigBio, and the MicroFungi project about using collections in the classroom. Will take place at North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences with excursions to Prairie Ridge Ecostation and North Carolina State University July9-11, 2018. NC Teacher Workshop 2018 Wiki NC Teacher Workshop 2018 Workshop Report 06/4/2018- 06/6/2018 Digital Data Conference: Emerging Innovations for Biodiversity Data The Berkeley Natural History Museums, the Berkeley Initiative for Global Change Biology, and iDigBio are pleased to announce the second annual Digital Data in Biodiversity Research Conference, to be held in Berkeley, CA, 4-6 June 2018. The 2018 conference will again encompass the uses of digitized data across all biodiversity disciplines, with special emphasis on digitized specimen data and the potential for "big data" analytics in organismal biology. Wiki Conference Report Unconference at DigiData II (blog post) 05/30/2018 - 06/01/2018 Developing an ontology for insect natural history data At this three-day workshop, we took the first steps toward developing a robust ontology for insect natural history data and natural history observations. We primarily focused on information from insect specimen labels, but we also recognized considerable overlap in content between insect natural history data from labels and insect natural history data from literature sources, which means that much of our work will be easily adaptable to literature-sourced data. This workshop is part of a western US workshop series with a goal to introduce undergraduate students, especially underrepresented populations, to museum and biodiversity science careers. Wiki Workshop Report 04/2018 Announcement - Collaborating on Archaeological Collections Care iDigBio will be presenting and participating in an upcoming session at the Society for American Archaeology. Session abstract organized by Roger Colten and S. Terry Childs: Archaeology shares collection management, preservation, analysis, and data retrieval issues with many scientific and cultural disciplines. Accessing the knowledge and expertise of colleagues in the natural history, museum, and other related professions can improve archaeological collections management and further scientific research. In this session, we seek to encourage collaboration with colleagues in a variety of professional organizations, such as the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections, Society of American Archivists, American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, Society for Historical Archaeology, American Cultural Resources Association, and others. The goal is to learn from and then adopt or adapt some of their best practices for the benefit of archaeological collections. Data management and data sharing, conservation and preservation, and sustainable management of collections are among the topics covered by session participants. 08/03/2018-09/03/2018 Workshop: Towards a strategic approach to digitising and mobilising UK museum biodiversity data Workshop: Regional digitisation project – practical review In this 2-day workshop, iDigBio is supporting UK efforts to foster across-region collaboration and discussions for development of a strategic plan and vision to digitize regional and small collections across the UK. Day 1 attendees are museum leaders and directors. We will share case studies of collaborative digitization and data mobilization and offer examples from potential key stakeholders while highlighting audience benefits. Topics include: the UK science / nature agenda, citizen science, workforce skills and diversity, the power of storytelling, funding models, and institutional benefits mapping. For day 2, attendees will be staff caring for small and regional collections, essentially, non-national museum curators. The focus shifts to ideas, models, and training for incorporating digitization at this level but to key in on practical recommendations that do not require additional budget or expertise if possible. Practical training may be offered in one or two key areas, for example, georeferencing and review of recommendations based on the Five Task Clusters paper (Nelson, et al 2012). Changes in digital technology have made it possible to collect, use, re-use, and share natural history collections and environmental data more easily. Workshop Report 06/24/2016 - 06/24/2016 SPNHC 2016 Developing a global research infrastructure framework for bio-collections as part of the One Collection: pathways to integration The future of biological collections lies in greater integration and cooperation to develop as a global Research Infrastructure (RI), with common practices, policy and systems. Achieving this requires mechanisms that enable us to draw on successful workflows, technologies and processes, and develop fair and efficient business models that ensure long-term sustainability of infrastructure. Building on the work of ADBC programme and coordinating groups like iDigBio, alongside the work of organisations and projects such as CETAF, GBIF, TDWG, NSCA and SYNTHESYS, this session will bring together key stakeholders to coordinate actions relevant to the development of a global RI on bio-collections. At European level, the European Strategic Framework for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) sets the top-level priorities for developing robust and sustainable RIs. Abstracts for Linked Symposia Linked Symposia Report 06/23/2016 - 06/23/2016 SPNHC 2016 Setting global and local digitisation priorities as part of the One Collection: pathways to integration (Symposium from GBIF Task Force on Accelerating Dicsovery of Biocollections Data): Who are the future users of the digital network and how do we develop common priorities to service these needs? From a purely economic standpoint, the simplest and cheapest way to prioritize digitization is to use the A-Z approach, that is, start from one end of a collection moving sequentially to the last end. With this approach there is little trouble tracking or skipping, it is neutral and can be easily industrialised by using conveyer belt systems. However, in the majority of situations, resources are scarce, sizes and the different kinds of collections are overwhelming, research is ongoing, urgent and important questions need to be answered hence the need to set digitization priorities based for example on taxonomy, geography, habitats, research needs, preservation methods, societal needs, and so on. Priorities may be set at the individual, institutional, local, regional, national or international levels, and furthermore they need not be uniform so long as they are fit for purpose. Strategic prioritization is essential in order to make the biggest impact on biodiversity science, policy, decisions, take advantage of funding opportunities, and leverage the best partnerships. Despite the concerted efforts and the deployment of significant resources in the last decade, it is estimated that only about 10% of the world’s c. 3 billion natural history collection specimens (NHCs) have been digitised with most of the efforts concentrated in North America and Western Europe. Furthermore, only some of the digitised collections are fully mobilised in terms of being findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. Past, current and planned digitisation projects that did not follow the A-Z approach and were not just opportunistic had to prioritise what they digitise and can provide important lessons to the biocollections community. Linked Symposia Report 06/23/2016 - 06/23/2016 SPNHC 2016 Small Collections Symposium: Blending the educational resources of small and large collections for training the next generation of museum professionals. Theme: We invite presentations from small and large institutions on current museum-based educational and workforce training initiatives, the development and sharing of novel educational or training modules and resources, graduate and undergraduate internships and courses focused on experiential learning in collections management and curation, and future directions for natural history museum workforce development focused on students and early career professionals. Rationale: Recent national and global digitization initiatives have led to a resurgence of interest in natural history collections (NHCs), the data they contain, and the potential to use NHC data to address large scale questions related to climate change, invasive species, and anthropogenic disturbance. This influx of energy into NHCs, emerging databases, emphasis on big data and data literacy, and the changing skill sets required to manage NHCs begs to examine the training of the next generation of scientists. The Implementation Plan for the Network Integrated Biocollections Alliance (USA) pointed to two emerging goals for the collections community that relate directly to education: 1) enhancing the training of existing collections staff and create the next generation of biodiversity information managers, and 2) infusing specimen-based learning and exploration into formal and informal science education. With the publication of Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology: A Call to Action, there has been a renewed interest in creating authentic research experiences. The next generation of college graduates needs to be competent in communication and collaboration, have quantitative competency, and the ability to understand and interpret data. The future workforce of biologists must be comfortable working with large databases. Specimens and data from NHCs can serve a unique role in workforce training as NHC specimens are uniquely qualified to teach about the iterative process of science, data literacy, quantitative biology, and biodiversity informatics. Workshop Wiki Workshop Agenda Workshop Report 07/26/2015 Ecological Niche Modeling: A Crash Course at Botany 2015 The abundance of digitized museum specimen records and observational occurrence data provides a fantastic resource for ecological niche modeling. However, navigating the many available methods can be bewildering. In this full-day workshop, we will provide hands-on instruction on ways to access and download these data (from GBIF, iDigBio, and other aggregators), prepare them for analysis, and apply Maxent software to construct ecological niche models. We will discuss the assumptions of the analyses and the interpretations of the results. The workshop is designed to introduce the concepts and practice of ecological niche modeling, so no experience is needed. However, we will explore advanced topics as requested. Although the digitization of museum collection data has been an effort underway in the mammal community for quite sometime, there still remain many mammal collections unavailable to the rest of the scientific world, especially those at smaller institutions without the infrastructure or support to undergo such efforts. However, through the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF), a national effort is underway to make these collections, among others, available to the greater research community, government agencies, students, educators, and the general public. This great resource of biodiversity information has been made accessible not only through the iDigBio portal, but also through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that applications written in any programming language can consume since 2013 to (a) access specimens, media, media metadata, datasets and publishers information, (b) perform searches, and (c) ingest media and its metadata. Currently, this great resource is mainly used by the iDigBio portal and iDigBio developed applications. A primary goal of the event was to increase the participation of underrepresented minorities in the biological sciences, including African/Black Americans, American Indians, Native Alaskans and Hawaiians, and Hispanics/Chicanos/Latinos. About 50 undergraduates and recent graduates attended the workshop and with about 30 professional scientists on hand, students had plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss interests with working biologists and collections professionals.) Workshop Report 07/31/2014 North American Network Small Herbaria Workshop iDigBio, the North American Network of Small Herbaria (NANSH), and SCNet collaborated on a 1-day workshop focused on digitizing small herbaria, at Botany 2014. The target audience for this workshop included directors, curators, and collections managers at smaller herbaria that have 1) yet to begin digitization, 2) started digitizing but would like to share ideas and discover new strategies, 3) captured data from some or all specimens but have yet to begin imaging, and/or 4) captured data in an electronic format (spreadsheets, documents, database, etc.) but would like to have a place to serve the data (and/or images) on the web. By joining an already sizeable body of digital primary biodiversity records these data will contribute to the fact that biodiversity research is becoming a data intensive science and for those taxonomic groups many of the current limitations may be overcome. The Pacific Science Inter-congress was attended by an assortment of biologists, ecologists, and social scientists. The program included a daylong symposium coordinated by Mantle and Dr. David Schindel, Executive Secretary of the Consortium for the Barcode of Life. This symposium, titled Connecting Biodiversity Collections in the Pacific: Digitization through DNA Barcoding and Informatics, spanned Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, with the Wednesday session focused mostly on the digitization and distribution of biodiversity data and Thursday, on DNA barcoding. Workshop Wiki Workshop Report 04/24/2013- 04/25/2013 iDigBio Entomology Digitization Workshop (DROID 2) This workshop will focus on digitization of dried insect specimens, stored in drawers and trays, either pinned or in packets. A sampling of workshop topics includes specimen label databasing, specimen imaging, ledger and field book databasing and imaging, database selection decisions, and digitization workflows. The workshop will be held at The Field Museum, Chicago, Illinois April 24-25, 2013. The emphasis will be on workflow options and workflow efficiency. The symposium will provide exposure to digitization efforts and challenges across taxonomic groups while the workshop will be a one-day training session on workflow concepts and logistics.
